The Kick-ass Factor

In the spring, you feel like going out to enjoy the -few hours of- sun in Rotterdam. Some events however are worth spending some time inside; like the one that celebrated (back in May) the six years of existence of Strange Fruit Music: the 6th Year Birthday Session.
Founded by DJ Thelonious and DJ Lucky Dubz, Strange Fruit offers “monthly music events for souladdicts, funkaholics, hiphopfanatics, dub-steppaz, jazzdancers & breakers!”

LOCATION IS KEY
Westelijk Handelsterrein is a rather unique place in Rotterdam: restaurants, art galleries and shops during the day; events of all kinds when the night comes. It’s situated in the maritime quarter and it has that classic, even rustic feel to it.

THE PARTY
Dubstep and Hip Hop. But in a rustic place? Well yes! It worked out fine. The organisation and security staff were pretty friendly too and it counts towards a great overall experience.
I went with a group of friends. We’re more into Hip hop than Dubstep so we hit that area first and man oh man! Old school beats, like 90s stuff, my teen years. Ah to be eighteen again... But seriously, amazing sounds, cool people; no one there came to show off or boast, just to have a good time. And they did; we all did.
After a while I moved to the Dubstep area to see what was going on, take some pictures and start finding ideas to write this story (yes, I was on duty). Like I said, Dubstep isn’t really my cup of tea but then again, live music (because DJ’s play live indeed) is about the show you put on as well. In fact, I enjoyed the performance and the actual music by extension. And it’s not like I was looked upon because I’d just come from the Hip hop room. On the contrary, everyone seemed to think it was mad cool people could switch so easily and actually did. Awesome sounds, a bit of a live show and open-minded party people, what more can you ask for on a Saturday night out? A couple of drinks? Oh there was some of that too.

These are the ingredients to a colorful event and a memorable party. Mix them like a good old Masta Ace beat (or Gang Starr or MA again) and you get the kick ass factor!!!
Props to Guido and Lucky.
