A few Words from Ai Ming Oei

A few minutes after a very intense performance, Ming of Ming’s Pretty Heroes answered our questions. Let’s see what she had to say.

RoSounds: Ming, hi.
Ming: Hi.

RoSounds: Tonight was the release party of your new album, Karma.
Ming: Yup!

RoSounds: So Karma is your second album, right?
Ming: The second yeah.

RoSounds: Do you feel the band Ming’s Pretty Heroes evolved since the First album (OK Mr. Mix), in terms of your music, in terms of your performance?
Ming: Yeah I definitely think we did. About our music, this album is even more “me” I guess and more what we wanted, like we exactly hit the spot.
Regarding our performance on stage, we’ve played so much, also in big music festivals, so we got used to bigger shows; we evolved in that way and we enjoy ourselves much much more now.

RoSounds: You said before that Karma is more “you” and on stage it really looks like you feel what you’re singing…
Ming: That’s really how it is. My first album was more a collection of songs I had written over the couple of years prior. For Karma, I wrote all the songs within a year so they’re definitely about a period of my life. Actually, having recorded them gave me some closure. The feelings are still recent and close to my heart though. In fact I’ve had performances where I started crying, which is not convenient at all because… well you can’t sing when you cry.

RoSounds: Despite Karma being about that one period of your life, there is diversity between the songs. Musically speaking, where did you guys get your inspiration from?
Ming: The sound and the arrangements are Frans Verburg’s and Sander van Dijck’s work, my keyboardist and my guitar player. They listen to different stuff than I do. But we like each other’s influences. There’s a lot of Post Rock going on -Sigur Rós- and we all love Björk and her weird style.
So different influences that we put together and it makes Karma this very interesting mix I think.

RoSounds: Ming, thank you, great show tonight and good luck with the upcoming ones.
Ming: Thanks.
